Greater Akron Chamber's KNOW Empowering Women Luncheon Featuring Laurie Cramer on October 18

8/25/2017
Greater Akron—Join KNOW on Wednesday, October 18, 2017, for the next Empowering Women Luncheon to hear Laurie Cramer, Executive Director of the Autism Society of Greater Akron, present “Autism, Avengers and Date Night:  A Working Girl’s Approach to Work-Life Balance.”

Laurie is the mother of two high-school aged sons, one of whom has moderate autism; her husband works full-time in a position that requires routine travel; and she serves as the Executive Director of the Autism Society of Greater Akron…sometimes in that order.  Work-life balance may be the goal, but work-life-reality-with-a-chance-for-sanity more accurately describes this working girl’s life.

Laurie Cramer was hired as the first staff member of the Autism Society of Greater Akron in 2011, after 20 years of the organization being an all-volunteer parent network.  She took over an organization with $2,000 in the bank; today, the organization’s budget is over $300,000, with four additional staff members, office space, full board, corporate partners and a regional impact on individuals and families living with autism.

Laurie’s drive and passion to support a better life for individuals on the autism spectrum came from her family’s personal journey of raising a child with autism. Prior to her current position, she worked in the field of communications, most recently as the spokesperson for Summit County Prosecutor Sherri Bevan Walsh.  Her experience also included being the Communications Director and spokesperson for two national energy-related associations as well as a Senior Vice President for the Hawthorn Group, a public affairs firm based in Washington, DC.  Laurie also served on Capitol Hill as Press Secretary to two members of Congress—John Conyers (MI) and Charles Bennett (FL).

Laurie and her family moved to Akron from Washington, DC. in 2003.  At that time, the family was learning that their two-and-one-half year-old son had autism. From that time forward, life in the Cramer house forever changed.

Laurie holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Communications from Florida State University, Tallahassee, FL, and a Master’s Degree in Organizational Development from George Washington University, Washington, DC.  Laurie and her husband reside in Fairlawn with their two sons, Philip and Robbie.
