Art After Five at Western Reserve Hospital on Jun. 21


Join Western Reserve Hospital, in partnership with ArtsNow, Collide: Cuyahoga Falls, the Cuyahoga Falls Chamber of Commerce and the Greater Akron Chamber for an inspired evening of networking at the third-annual Community Art Showcase.  Enjoy complimentary drinks and appetizers while you socialize and network in a creative, relaxed setting. Art will be available for purchase, and Falls boutiques will host pop-up shops.  Live music will be performed.

WAKR Speaker Series with Terry Pluto on Jun. 28


Hey Sports Fans!  Mark your calendars for Thursday, June 28, as 1590 WAKR invites you to a special benefit luncheon for the Salvation Army.  Our featured guest speaker is Terry Pluto, sportswriter, newspaper columnist and author. Akron Safety Town Seeking Volunteers in June


Volunteers are needed for a variety of positions. Most specifically needed are folks willing and able to help the children engage the activities within the small groups. Volunteers act simultaneously as mentor, chaperone, and teacher to support the adult team leaders/teachers. Volunteers can choose which day/days and how much time they want to serve. The first week is June 18-22, 8:30 a.m. to noon, Forest Hill CLC, 850 Damon St. The second week is June 25-29, 8:30 a.m. to noon, King CLC, 805 Memorial Pkwy. Volunteers can call Fairlawn West United Church of Christ's school secretary, Susan Kolarik at (330) 864-2179 to schedule dates and times.

Veterans Day Recognition Ceremony on Nov. 9


Guest speaker will be Kevin Lacz, former Navy SEAL, New York Times best-selling author, and co-star of American Sniper.  Flags raised by ROTC at 10:30 a.m.  All are invited to come and pay tribute to America’s veterans.  A special invitation is extended to Kent State faculty, staff, students, alumni and community members who are veterans, active service members or have family members in the armed forces. Refreshments to follow in the Kiva lobby.  Free parking available in the Kent Student Center parking lot.

Skye Forney Scholarship Foundation Presents Beyond Vision Conference on Feb. 10


Our Beyond Vision Program allocates visual aid equipment to blind and low vision individuals. Raising Public Awareness to the daily achievements of people whom are visually impaired. We work to create a base of support for community groups forming an alliance to provide and dramatically accelerate development in visually impaired awareness. The foundation will be introducing the Beyond Vision Performing Arts Academy.  Our Beyond Vision Conference features speaker Pastor Donald N. Hale Farm & Village Presents "Holiday Market on the Farm" on Dec. 1


Join us for our Holiday Market on the Farm. We will be celebrating the holidays with local artist! Fifteen local artists will be at Hale Farm offering their on-of-a-kind hand-crafted items. The Hale Café will be taken over by Bomba Tacos and Rum from Fairlawn, Peace, Love and Little Donuts will be here and Native Hill Coffee will be serving up hot cups of coffee. We will also have Ohio beers and wines available to enjoy while you shop!  Admission is FREE.

Junior Achievement Financial Services Industry Bowl-a-Thon Event on Nov. 16


JA Bowl-A-Thons are held to raise awareness and resources to support Junior Achievement's mission: to inspire and prepare young people to succeed in a global economy.  Each year, thousands of people participate to have fun, enjoy the camaraderie and partake in our Bowl-A-Thon events! These events give companies an opportunity to give back to the community in a fun and unique way. Participants enjoy bowling, prizes, music and the chance to interact with their coworkers and peers from throughout the community.

Turkey Trot 5K Run and Kids Fun Run Hosted by Kent State University at Stark on Nov. 18


Kent State University at Stark will host the annual Turkey Trot, an adult 5K and a children’s ¼ mile Fun Run, on Saturday, Nov. 18. The events will be held on Kent State Stark’s beautiful, 200-acre campus, located at 6000 Frank Ave. NW in Jackson Township. 
The Kids Fun Run begins at 8:30 a.m. Registration takes place on the day of the event, beginning at 7:30 a.m., at Kent State Stark’s Recreation & Wellness Center.  The fee is $5 per child and may be paid on the day of the event. Participants in the children’s Fun Run will receive a medal. They also will make a craft to take home.
The adult 5K race begins at 9 a.m. Registration will take place between 7:45 to 8:45 a.m. Registration is required. The pre-pay fee, accepted through Nov. 3, is $20 per person. From Nov. 4-18, the fee is $25 per person. Participants can pay online with their registration at ohioraceday.com. If registering at the event, payment will be accepted by cash or check (payable to Kent State University at Stark). 
In addition to the monetary fee, adult and children participants should bring one non-perishable food item to benefit the Stark County Hunger Task Force. All 5K participants will receive a T-shirt and a medal. HallowScene Indoor Trick or Treat on Oct. 26


Calling all ghosts, goblins, princes, and fairies! Check out Scene75’s indoor trick or treat event, a safe night full of treats and no scaries!  Kids are back in school, pumpkin spice is everywhere, and the leaves are starting to change.  Fall is finally here! For Scene75 Cleveland this means that our first ever FREE Indoor Trick-or-Treat Event is right around the corner!  We are looking forward to seeing all of the families and smiling faces on Thursday, October 26th from 6:00pm-9:00pm for a warm, safe, and fun trick-or-treat event!
In typical Scene75 “do it big” fashion, we are preparing over a ton of candy for the event (literally 2,000+ pounds of candy)!  Located throughout our facility there will be 10+ stations welcoming costumed children to say “trick-or-treat” in exchange for a handful of candy and the occasional toy.  Plus, we will have a series of costume contests for kids starting at 7:00 p.m., with a prize for each of the winners. Last year there were some super cute and scary costumes, lets see if we can top them this year! (Ages 0-3 at 7:00 p.m., Ages 4-7 at 7:30 p.m., Ages 8-12 at 8:00 p.m.)

The Software Guild Akron Networking and Employer Recruiting Event on Nov. 1 & 2


We are pleased to announce that the next group of eager and talented developers are preparing to graduate from The Software Guild. This is an invitation to our Employer Connect event that will take place on November 1st and 2nd from 1:00 - 5:30 p.m. The format for the event is similar to a speed interview/date (20 minutes provided per person). Typically, organizations follow-up with prospective candidates soon after these events realizing our developers are in high demand. Prior to the event, we will e-mail you the developer's resumes that have signed up expressing interest in interviewing with your organization.

Development Fund of the Western Reserve Announcement


The Development Fund of the Western Reserve (DFWR), which is affiliated with the Development Finance Authority of Summit County (DFA), received the Project of the Year award from the Ohio Community Development Corporation Association (OCDCA) at its annual conference held in Toledo October 6, 2017. OCDCA is a statewide membership organization that fosters vibrant neighborhoods and improves the quality of life in all communities through advocacy and capacity building of their member agencies. The Project of the Year award was for implementing the Akron Community Revitalization Fund (ACRF) that DFWR recently fully capitalized as a revolving loan fund for projects located within the most distressed neighborhoods within the City of Akron. The award was accepted by Alyson Moritz and Rachel Bridenstine, who represented DFWR, at the conference breakfast attended by hundreds of the Ohio Community Development professionals. The ACRF project was truly a collaborative effort with over 20 organizations, many individuals, and funders. This award is an acknowledgement of the strong community vision to improve the City of Akron's core vibrancy with innovative economic development tools.

Convention & Visitors Bureau Captures Top Destination Award


The Akron/Summit Convention & Visitors Bureau (CVB) received its 19th “Top Destination Award” from Facilities & Destinations Magazine. The annual reader poll of event and meeting planners surveyed their evaluations of destinations throughout the United States. The Akron/Summit CVB was among only forty-seven bureaus nationally to receive this year’s distinction and one of only nine from the Midwest region.

H. Jack's Works Hard for a Cure all the Month of October 2017


H. Jack's is working hard for the cure! October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and that's why a portion of the proceeds for every service call this month will go to Susan G. Komen Northeast Ohio to fund the fight against breast cancer. This is our second October partnering with the foundation, and we couldn't be more excited to start giving back to our great community.

Akron Area YMCA Jack-O -Lantern Jog on Oct. 12


The 2017 Jack-O-Lantern Jog 5K presented by NECA/IBEW will again take place this October in Lock 3, and we will run through the historically spooky Glendale Cemetery. In addition to the race, we will have tons of free entertainment and free child watch for the little ones while you participate in the run.

The NEW Center Hosts Sales Management and Leadership on Nov. 2


Proven sales trainers Hal Becker and Marvin Montgomery have designed a hands-on workshop for sales professionals and sales managers. Using years of experience as salespeople, sales team leaders and sales coaches, they have designed a full-day experience that will give you the strategies and tools you need to excel.

This is a full day sales training will cover the gamut of the sales process including effective cold calling techniques, selling on value vs. price, overcoming customer resistance and closing and follow-up technique. Heavy emphasis will be on qualifying the customer, listening skills, territory management and what the top 3% of all salespeople have in common for incredible execution.
