The World Golf Championships-Bridgestone Invitational is chipping in more than $1 million for Akron Children’s Hospital, UH Rainbow Babies & Children's Hospital and 36 area charities. Officials from the invitational and Northeast Ohio Golf Charities announced the donations — totalling $1,015,981 — during the annual Bridgestone Invitational, Northern Ohio Golf Charities luncheon Thursday at the Bridgestone Americas Technical Center in Akron.

The money for the donations was raised in connection with the 2016 tournament.

“Bridgestone and Northern Ohio Golf Charities are phenomenal partners that enable the Bridgestone Invitational to give back to worthy local causes,” Don Padgett, executive director of the Bridgestone Invitational, said in a prepared statement. “This event has a meaningful impact on the area all year long and we have our fans, area businesses and volunteers to thank for their support.”

Northern Ohio Golf Charities Foundation is part of a volunteer organization that has joined with professional golf tournaments at Firestone Country Club for more than 50 years. Collectively, the tournaments have provided more than $26 million to Northeast Ohio charities.
