Greater Akron—Akron might have lost a golf course, but it's gaining some park space and access to the Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath – thanks to the Summit Metro Parks' purchase of the Valley View Golf Club.  The park district announced Thursday, Oct. 6, that it purchased the course's 194 acres, which straddle the Cuyahoga River between Cuyahoga and North Howard streets, for $4 million.

Rather than try to keep the course open in an era when many golf courses are struggling or losing money, the park district will work to restore the land to a natural setting and use it as an interconnecting space between other parks and trails.  District spokesman Nathan Eppink, in announcing the purchase, described the land as "the missing piece of the puzzle" between Cascade Valley and Gorge parks, which each border the course.
