Driver’s License & Vehicle Registration

Vehicle & Licensing Compliance

Ohio state law requires new residents to obtain an Ohio driver’s license, an Ohio title for motor vehicles, and Ohio license plates within 30 days. To complete this process, follow these steps:

1) Review the Digest of Ohio Motor Vehicle Laws .

2) Go to a Driver’s License Examination Station to take a written test and vision screening. The driving test is usually waived if you have a current driver’s license from another state. Be sure to bring the appropriate identifying documents.

3) After passing the tests, take your certified exam-passed form to the Deputy Registrar License Agency to obtain your Ohio driver’s license and to have your out-of-state vehicle inspected. (NOTE: Most new car dealerships will inspect your vehicle with no appointment necessary, but you should contact the dealer’s service department to confirm.)

4) Take your current title and your inspection form to your county’s Clerk of Courts Title Office to obtain an Ohio title for your vehicle. If you do not have your title, contact your lien holder to see how to handle the transfer.

5) Go to an E-Check Service Center to have an emissions check done on your vehicle. All three counties in the Greater Akron Region require E-Check certification.

6) Return to the Deputy Registrar License Agency with your title and E-Check certification to obtain your Ohio license plates.
