Meaden & Moore Celebrates 100 Years: Finding a “Nail to Hang a Hat” Here in Akron

Friday, February 14, 2020 by Barry Thoman, CPA, Vice President, Assurance Services Group

What growth have you experienced since the start of your company?
This year is our centennial celebration. We were established in 1919 by Douglas Meaden, one of the first CPAs in Ohio. V.J. Moore, applied for a job with Meaden in 1922 as an “adding machine expert" and formed a partnership with Meaden in 1935. What began as a small firm has grown into an international advisory firm with over 200 specialists, in eighteen offices spanning the U.S., U.K. and Canada. I am in the sixth generation of the company. Each generation has built upon the success of  those coming before them and has guided the firm forward based upon the times and future they envisioned.

What made you stay in Akron?
Our Akron roots were planted in 2001 with a true belief of the downtown structure. It was all about centers of influence for us and Akron is easily accessible to these, which allow us to make an impact on not only our customers, but our community. During this process, we have grown to feel very safe with the security of our building in thanks to the Downtown Akron Partnership.

What sets you apart in your industry?
In our industry, trust is a necessity. Many of our referrals are very warm due to the network of trusted advisors we have built over time. One of our sweet spots is working with entrepreneurs as full-service consultants. As a firm, we have chosen to grow organically and independently, allowing collaboration - connecting the right person to the right engagement every time. Remaining independent has allowed us to embrace the entrepreneurial spirit and allowed us to connect with our customers on a deeper level. Working with entrepreneurs has taught us to never see boundaries, only opportunities.

What does this amazing milestone mean to you and your team?
Our commitment to people always comes first. We view ourselves as ‘stewards’ of this firm. We want to leave it to generation seven in a good way. Our legacy is an important one to keep and it has been a humbling year for us. This year has taught us that we are a family and will stay this way. Our retention rate is incredible with many partners not have worked anywhere else in their career. Between the many awards, events, and internal celebrations, our responsibility remains the same for the next 100 years: to be honest to ourselves and our customers. In celebration of our 100 years, we have also donated $100,000 to various charities in the community.

What are your plans for 2020?
Our plan for 2020 is to be at the forefront of the latest technology. Many systems and softwares have already helped with our process and allow our staff members to focus on higher-level work, rather than data entry.
