Emerge Counseling Adds More Statewide Tele-Counseling Options

Amidst the current challenges of Covid-19, many people are experiencing anxieties and concerns due to the resultant economic and stay-at-home restrictions impact. In response to this need, Emerge Counseling has significantly increased its tele-counseling services. Currently, anyone in the state of Ohio could receive counseling support from one of Emerge Counseling’s 35+ licensed clinicians and, in many cases, that assistance would be covered by their insurance

OSHA requires forklift operator training for anyone that might operate a forklift. This extends beyond your normal operators to include anyone that might simply have to start a forklift for any reason. This could include managers, truck drivers etc... OSHA also requires: "All operator training and evaluation shall be conducted by persons who have the knowledge, training, and experience to train powered industrial truck operators and evaluate their competence."

METRO RTA Announces Free Fares Beginning Tuesday, March 17, 2020

*UPDATE AS OF 4/5/2020 - Metro RTA Cutting Some Service in Akron; Pandemic Affecting Canton, Cleveland, Youngstown Transit* METRO Regional Transit Authority is offering free fares for all services, including line-service, SCAT, Call-A-Bus, and Northcoast Express, beginning Tuesday, March 17 until further notice. “These are challenging times for everyone,” said METRO Executive Director Dawn Distler. “By offering free fares, we hope to alleviate the financial burden so many folks are unexpectedly faced with in the communities we proudly serve. We also hope this assists with the distancing challenges our bur operators face when interacting with passengers during their trips.” METRO will continue providing service, but passengers are being encouraged to stay home if their trip is not medically or otherwise necessary. All passengers are encouraged to follow the CDC guidelines to prevent the spread of germs, including washing hands often and avoiding close physical contact.

Soap Box Derby Partners with Cleveland Clinic Akron General to Present Senior Day at Derby Downs on Aug. 30

Senior Day is an opportunity for active adults to enjoy lunch, entertainment, health information booths, health screenings and one trip down the Derby Downs track in an adult Soap Box Derby car. Senior Day is scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 30, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. with lunch being served from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tickets are $14 each and can be purchased at Akron General Health & Wellness Centers, Akron-area AAA branch offices, at Derby Downs Headquarters office, and online.

Soap Box Derby Partners with GPD Employees' Foundation to Present Inclusion Day on Aug. 11

The Soap Box Derby announces its partnership with GPD Employees’ Foundation for the third year in a row for a special event called GPD Employees’ Foundation presents Inclusion Day. Inclusion Day, which will be held Saturday, August 11, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., is an event for youth with all different abilities and their siblings or friends, giving them the opportunity to ride down the 989-foot Derby Downs Track in a dual-operated Soap Box Derby Car. Offered at the event is a place where families can enjoy lunch, entertainment, and other activities that encourage involvement and inclusion.

Soap Box Derby STEM Summer Camp at Derby Downs in June

The International Soap Box Derby (ISBD) will be hosting the sixth annual Soap Box Derby STEM Summer Camp at Derby Downs during June 11-15 and June 18-22 from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. This five-day program is designed for youth ages 9-12 and will give them the opportunity to participate in STEM-driven activities (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math). Youth will design, build, and race daily Soap Box Derby Cars down the Derby Downs track. Youth will also construct, test, and compete in a Mini Soap Box Derby race. There will be a variety of other fun, hands-on activities throughout the week as well as Friday’s Soap Box Derby and Mini Soap Box Derby Car races. Family and friends are invited to attend and cheer for their racers during the competition and awards presentations. As well as tour the Soap Box Derby’s Hall of Fame and Museum.

Volunteers are needed for a variety of positions. Most specifically needed are folks willing and able to help the children engage the activities within the small groups. Volunteers act simultaneously as mentor, chaperone, and teacher to support the adult team leaders/teachers. Volunteers can choose which day/days and how much time they want to serve. The first week is June 18-22, 8:30 a.m. to noon, Forest Hill CLC, 850 Damon St. The second week is June 25-29, 8:30 a.m. to noon, King CLC, 805 Memorial Pkwy. Peak Viewing for Daffodils in Furnace Run Metro Park

Thousands of daffodils – including dozens of varieties – are expected to be at or near peak-bloom by this weekend and through the middle part of next week along the H.S. Wagner Daffodil Trail in Furnace Run Metro Park (3100 Brush Rd., Richfield). Parking in the gravel lot is limited to about 10 cars, so visitors are encouraged to be patient and go weekdays before 4 p.m. There are three picnic tables and a porta-potty near the start of the trail. The 0.6-mile Daffodil Trail is named for the first director of Summit Metro Parks. Harold S. Wagner planted the first bulbs there in the late 1930s. For more information, call (330) 865-8065.
