Emerge Counseling Adds More Statewide Tele-Counseling Options

Amidst the current challenges of Covid-19, many people are experiencing anxieties and concerns due to the resultant economic and stay-at-home restrictions impact. In response to this need, Emerge Counseling has significantly increased its tele-counseling services. Currently, anyone in the state of Ohio could receive counseling support from one of Emerge Counseling’s 35+ licensed clinicians and, in many cases, that assistance would be covered by their insurance

Professional, Reliable Operator Training by Valley Industrial Trucks

OSHA requires forklift operator training for anyone that might operate a forklift. This extends beyond your normal operators to include anyone that might simply have to start a forklift for any reason. This could include managers, truck drivers etc... OSHA also requires: "All operator training and evaluation shall be conducted by persons who have the knowledge, training, and experience to train powered industrial truck operators and evaluate their competence."

METRO RTA Announces Free Fares Beginning Tuesday, March 17, 2020

*UPDATE AS OF 4/5/2020 - Metro RTA Cutting Some Service in Akron; Pandemic Affecting Canton, Cleveland, Youngstown Transit* METRO Regional Transit Authority is offering free fares for all services, including line-service, SCAT, Call-A-Bus, and Northcoast Express, beginning Tuesday, March 17 until further notice. “These are challenging times for everyone,” said METRO Executive Director Dawn Distler. “By offering free fares, we hope to alleviate the financial burden so many folks are unexpectedly faced with in the communities we proudly serve. We also hope this assists with the distancing challenges our bur operators face when interacting with passengers during their trips.” METRO will continue providing service, but passengers are being encouraged to stay home if their trip is not medically or otherwise necessary. All passengers are encouraged to follow the CDC guidelines to prevent the spread of germs, including washing hands often and avoiding close physical contact.

One of Environmental Design Group's Founding Members Passes

William J. Bandy, Jr., one of Environmental Design Group's founding members, recently passed away at the age of 78. Bill was instrumental in leading the leverage buyout of Snell Environmental to form Environmental Design Group, Inc. in 1984. He served as President and Chairman of the Board from 1984 until his retirement in 2004. He was quiet in nature but held himself with the utmost integrity and garnered great respect from his staff and peers. Dedicated to his profession, his career spanned more than 45-years as an active member of ASME and ASCE. He supported numerous student development alumni programs at the University of Akron, most notably its Women in Engineering program which encourages women to join the field. A celebration of life will be held on Wednesday, April 25 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Clifford-Shoemaker Funeral Home in Cuyahoga Falls. A colleague, a mentor, and a friend, Bill's presence will be greatly missed.

VANTAGE Aging (formerly Mature Services) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that promotes successful aging by providing programs to support the needs of older adults wishing to age in place. Each year, we host the SOAR Awards (Summit Oscars for Aging Resources) to recognize those in Summit County who are making a difference in the lives of older adults. We are seeking nominations for awards that may align with Greater Akron Chamber members’ interests. The Innovations in Aging Award goes to a person or organization who has done something innovative in the last year in Summit County to serve older adults. The Age Friendly Business Award goes to a business in Summit County who strives to be friendly to older adults in how they do business. Community Connections Northeast Ohio Seeking Employment Hosts for Students

Community Connections is seeking host employers for Summit County’s 2018 Summer Youth Employment Program, sponsored by the Ohio Department of Jobs and Family Services (ODJFS). ODJFS acts as the employer who pays all wages, covers BWC, background checks, fingerprinting, and assumes liability. You just provide the work, they provide the labor! Students are supervised at all times by a highly qualified job coach, at a ratio of one job coach to two students. Students work four hours/day, five days/week. You pick the hours!

Soap Box Derby Continues Impacting Community Through Racing and STEM Education Programs

The International Soap Box Derby’s used Derby Downs for more than 70 events and over 10,000 trips down its historic track by community members and visitors as reported in the recently released Annual Report. Over 600 schools and 10,000 students are participating in the International Soap Box Derby’s STEM education programs. The All-American Racing program has more than 95 race districts which conducted 1,299 races with over 3,500 youth competing.

The International Soap Box Derby continues to grow its fundraising efforts as Geri Douglas Marshall has been hired as the first Director of Development. “As we are in the middle of FY 2018, we welcome Geri as Director of Development. The Director of Development position will intentionally further develop the Derby’s mission by increasing revenues and expanding our reach both regionally, nationally and internationally,” stated President & CEO Mark Gerberich. The Derby continues to make great strides in ensuring its sustainability and mission. To further development and achieve our strategic goals, the Derby has hired the following individuals to fill these newly created positions.

County Executive Shapiro and County Council Recognizing the Month of March as Women’s History Month in Summit County
