On the Table Greater Akron to Dig Into Akron's Issues on Oct. 3


Akron Beacon Journal On the Table Greater Akron returns next month with more public mealtime conversations designed to improve the community. “On the Table is an opportunity for everyone in the community to have their voice heard,” Akron Community Foundation Vice President of Community Investment John Garofalo said in a prepared statement. “We want to ensure all residents have the opportunity to participate, even if they don’t know someone hosting a conversation or are not comfortable hosting themselves. We’re excited that this will also give attendees the opportunity to meet and interact with people from different backgrounds and neighborhoods.” The conversations, headed by the foundation, are open to Summit and Medina County residents.  They will be held Oct. 3 at various locations.

T-Shirt Wearers Could Win Spirit Airlines Vouchers in "Wear Your 330 Shirt to Work Day" Contest

VANTAGE Aging (formerly Mature Services) is Seeking Nominations for Awards


VANTAGE Aging (formerly Mature Services) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that promotes successful aging by providing programs to support the needs of older adults wishing to age in place. Each year, we host the SOAR Awards (Summit Oscars for Aging Resources) to recognize those in Summit County who are making a difference in the lives of older adults. We are seeking nominations for awards that may align with Greater Akron Chamber members’ interests. The Innovations in Aging Award goes to a person or organization who has done something innovative in the last year in Summit County to serve older adults. The Age Friendly Business Award goes to a business in Summit County who strives to be friendly to older adults in how they do business. Hale Farm & Village Presents Sow & Grow Farm Festival and Plant Sale on Jun. 9 & 10


Experience the past and present farming lifestyle of draft horse demonstrations, oxen talks, wheel plowing gardens, beekeeping and exploring the gardens on property maintained by the Great Lakes Brewing Company and the Bath Gamma Garden Club. The festival also features chicken keeping talks, sheep shearing, fiber dyeing and much more! TEDxAkron 2018 on Apr. 21


TEDxAkron was organized in an effort to bring members of the Akron community together to discuss issues that impact the community and bring a positive change to the world beginning in Akron, Ohio.  At the TEDxAkron 2018 event on April 21, TEDTalks video and live speakers will combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group.

Community Connections Northeast Ohio Seeking Employment Hosts for Students


Community Connections is seeking host employers for Summit County’s 2018 Summer Youth Employment Program, sponsored by the Ohio Department of Jobs and Family Services (ODJFS). ODJFS acts as the employer who pays all wages, covers BWC, background checks, fingerprinting, and assumes liability. You just provide the work, they provide the labor! Students are supervised at all times by a highly qualified job coach, at a ratio of one job coach to two students. Students work four hours/day, five days/week. You pick the hours!

Soap Box Derby Continues Impacting Community Through Racing and STEM Education Programs


The International Soap Box Derby’s used Derby Downs for more than 70 events and over 10,000 trips down its historic track by community members and visitors as reported in the recently released Annual Report. Over 600 schools and 10,000 students are participating in the International Soap Box Derby’s STEM education programs. The All-American Racing program has more than 95 race districts which conducted 1,299 races with over 3,500 youth competing.

Pro Football Hall of Fame Concert for Legends Featuring Maroon 5 on Aug. 5

Geri Douglas Marshall Hired as New Director of Development


The International Soap Box Derby continues to grow its fundraising efforts as Geri Douglas Marshall has been hired as the first Director of Development. “As we are in the middle of FY 2018, we welcome Geri as Director of Development. The Director of Development position will intentionally further develop the Derby’s mission by increasing revenues and expanding our reach both regionally, nationally and internationally,” stated President & CEO Mark Gerberich. The Derby continues to make great strides in ensuring its sustainability and mission. To further development and achieve our strategic goals, the Derby has hired the following individuals to fill these newly created positions.

Akron Zoo Offering Popular ZooCamp Summer Program


The Akron Zoo is once again offering ZooCamp programs throughout the summer for children two through 15 years old. ZooCamp runs June through August and one-day, three-day and five-day camps are available, as well as full-day and half-day camps. Registration is required, and spots fill quickly.

County Executive Shapiro and County Council Recognizing the Month of March as Women’s History Month in Summit County


Earlier this week, Summit County Council passed legislation that was approved by Summit County Executive Ilene Shapiro recognizing the month of March 2018 as Women’s History Month in Summit County. The legislation, sponsored by Executive Shapiro and County Councilmember Paula Prentice recognizes the women of America, their historical achievements, as well as the struggles they have overcome and continue to face.

Suntrol Earns Eastman's National Dealer of the Year Award


Suntrol, the Midwest leader in window film, received Eastman’s coveted National Dealer of theYear Award for Window Film Excellence during a special conference held in Carlsbad, Calif., February 22-25. Suntrol was selected from a field of hundreds of dealers based on dealer loyalty, growth and use of Eastman’s exclusive sales and marketing programs.

Stan Hywet Opens for the 2018 Season on Apr. 3


Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens opens for the 2018 season on April 3, with the theme of "Health & Wellness, A Life Well-Lived." Guests will begin each visit in the updated and redesigned Orientation Room. Highlights of the season include a new tour geared for youth, a new garden featuring culinary and medicinal plants, a second season of the 3-D lightshow LightNights, and the addition of the Molto Bella Car Show coming in September.
