2019 ATHENA Leadership Awards Dinner

ATHENA Akron, Inc. will honor the 2019 ATHENA Leadership Award Recipients and Finalists at a dinner and awards program. The event recognizes exemplary women leaders for their professional achievement, community involvement, and for actively assisting women in reaching their full leadership potential.

This year’s Leadership Award recipients will join more than 60 local women leaders who have been honored as recipients or finalists of this important award. Recipients to be honored with
the 2019 ATHENA Leadership Award include Traci Buckner, Executive Director, Akron Children’s Museum; and Grace Wakulchik, President and CEO, Akron Children’s Hospital. Award finalists to be honored include Tina Boyes, Executive Director, Kenmore Neighborhood Alliance; Pamela Kiltau, Vice President of Private Wealth Management, Baird; and Pamela Wright, Partner, Sikich LLP.

The recipient to be honored with the 2019 ATHENA Young Professional Award is Erin Victor, Director of Engagement and Events, Focal Point, and Founder, Akron Snow Angels. Award
finalists to be honored include Kimberly Huff, Community Relations Representative, OMNOVA Solutions Foundation; and Antha Poleondakis, Investment Associate, Merrill Lynch.

Registration and networking begins at 5 p.m. followed by dinner at 5:45 p.m. The evening’s program will be led by Retired Judge Carla Moore, and the Keynote Speaker will be 2018 ATHENA Leadership Award recipient, The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company’s Sherry Neubert.

Akron Urban League Presents Procurement Corridor Event on Oct. 24

If you are a business owner and need information on how to find opportunities and contracts for your business, this event is for you!

Key Goals:

  • Business owners will meet face-to-face with local companies and learn how to bid on their contracting opportunities.
  • Business owners will be provided details on how to do business in the Greater Akron Region.
  • Business owners will receive coaching on how to navigate a vendor registration process in order to register and bid on opportunities.
  • Business owners will connect with agencies that have resources and services that can help with managing and growing a business.

MAGNET Announces the Grand Opening of the Rubber City MAGNET office in MAGNET South!

MAGNET’s new office is designed to better serve the manufacturing businesses of Summit and Stark Counties through hands-on consulting, workforce development, new product development, and more. Grand opening to be held on August 8th with Formal Comments and Ribbon Cutting to begin at 4 p.m.  For over 30 years, MAGNET: The Manufacturing Advocacy and Growth Network, has served the 21 counties of Northeast Ohio from its headquarters in Cleveland.  As of August 8th, MAGNET will “double down” on serving the manufacturing companies of Summit, Stark, Wayne, Medina, Portage, Mahoning, Columbiana, Tuscarawas and Homes counties through opening a new office at 9 North Main Street in Akron.  The core of this critical area contains over 1,300 manufacturing businesses, according to the Ohio Manufacturers Association.  MAGNET will focus on serving the manufacturing community from this new centrally-located satellite office.

The Race for the Cure® is celebrating its 8th year in the City of Akron on October 13 at Canal Park. Thanks to events such as the Race, Komen NEO has invested more than $15 million in local programs that assist low-income, disadvantaged women from accessing the life-saving services they need to diagnose & treat the disease. The Ben Curtis Family Foundation Presents An Evening on the Links on Jul. 23

The Ben Curtis Family Foundation was founded by 2003 British Open Champion, Ben Curtis and his wife, Candace in 2013. The mission of the Foundation is to help alleviate childhood hunger. The annual Professionals' Luau will be on RAIN or SHINE!  There will be enclosed building (with walls that open for a great cross breeze).  There will also be a Hawaiian burger bar, boating (we'll have a few boats giving rides), pizza, sides, drinks, desserts and leis for everyone!  We'll even have a professional DJ spinning Hawaiian/Luau music!  (Look for the Farmers Flag by the road so you don't miss the entrance.)  Bring plenty of business cards... we are expecting over 200 attendees all from our local business community!


We have an exciting line-up of sponsors this year:
  • Our main co-sponsor this year is SMOKE The Burger Joint, located in North Canton. They are providing a build-your-own burger bar, with their special Hawaiian Burger recipe, along with a traditional burger. They will be providing some of their delicious side dishes as well.
